Ammonia (NH3)

Complaints concerning ammonia usually come from composting plants and from agricultural operations. Ammonia is a compound with the formula NH3. It is normally encountered as a gas with a characteristic pungent odour.

Intense concentration of ammonia may result in odour complaints and can lead to negative publicity. In extreme situations it may also discourage capital investment and limit your growth. Local or national authorities can limit or even stop your activities, and if you fail to address a nuisance problem you could also face legal action and a fine.

The trend toward larger animal facilities with liquid manure systems only intensifies the problem. Although ammonia contributes significantly to the nutritional needs of earth, the gas itself is caustic and can cause serious damage to human health and the environment.

If methods for containing odours from ammonia within the boundary of the farm are insufficient, odour treatment methods may be necessary. Ammonia emissions can easily be treated chemically to reduce odour nuisance.
